Written decades before Freud created the concepts of the id and the ego, this story follows an ordinary man living his ordinary life as a doctor. But his own experimental drug, meant to separate the two sides of human nature—good and bad—unleashes his evil persona that slowly dominates his entire self. Murders happen, control slips away and he has to choose: humanity or calamity. That is, if he isn’t already drowning in his own insanity.
The story is set in foggy London, through the eyes of a lawyer named Gabriel Otterson. Otterson is suspicious of the relationship between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and a crude, short, and extremely evil man named Edward Hyde. Hyde has been involved in numerous acts of violence, but strangely, Jekyll has always protected him, even writing him a will.
After Hyde disappears after murdering a respected figure, Dr. Jekyll appears increasingly ill and isolates himself in his laboratory. Eventually, Otterson breaks down the laboratory door and finds Hyde dead, dead by suicide, wearing Jekyll's oversized clothes.
Through the will he left behind, his secret is revealed: Dr. Jekyll has created a chemical concoction that can separate the good and evil sides of human beings. Upon drinking it, Jekyll transforms physically and mentally into Hyde—a figure who embodies all his evil desires without any sense of guilt. Initially, Jekyll enjoys this freedom, but over time, Hyde becomes too powerful and begins to take over his body spontaneously without the potion's aid. Having run out of ingredients to make an antidote, Jekyll finally chooses to end his life (and Hyde's) rather than remain a monster forever.
